CAR SERVICES

Uber and Lyft are both available on Martha’s Vineyard, but expect longer wait times than in major cities.

__________

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION: LOCAL BUS LINES

The Martha’s Vineyard Transit Authority (VTA) provides reliable, extensive bus service across the island and its network of towns, including Edgartown where Vineyard Arts Project is located.

The VTA lines are numbered from 1 through 13, with five of them (No. 1, 6, 8, 11, and 13) running directly through Edgartown. #8 is the exclusive route to South Beach, a popular local attraction, and #11, which runs for free, is the line for downtown Edgartown.

During peak season (June 23-Sept 2), most VTA buses begin service in the morning sometime in the 6 o’clock hour, and run every 10, 15, or 30 minutes until at least as late as 11pm, with some continuing into the early am hours (except for the #8 South Beach bus, whose last round trip from Edgartown departs at 10:15pm and returns at 10:39). See this map (front and back) for the VTA bus routes and schedules.

Fares work according to the number of towns along your route (up to five) per one-way trip; the standard one-way fare is $1.25 per town, including the town of origin. All VTA buses are equipped with electronic fareboxes which can accept exact fare in cash for one-way rides.

Alternatively, day passes (from an $8 day pass to a $60 month [31 day] pass) can be used and are available for purchase on the bus or at local ticket sellers. If you are staying for three days or more and plan to take the bus to see the island, we recommend purchasing a day pass (3-day = $18, 7-day = $30).

Discounts are offered for seniors (65+) and disabled, while children under 6 years of age ride for free, and Lines #10 (Tisbury Park and Ride) and #11 (Downtown Edgartown) are free for all riders

Additional info for riders (see http://www.vineyardtransit.com):

  • In addition to posted stops, the VTA operates a flag-bus system; passengers may wave to the driver along the route for pick-up. (Passengers must be on the correct side of the road for the direction that they are going.) Due to safety and traffic concerns, buses are prohibited from stopping at intersections, on curves, and at select street locations in downtown areas.

  • All buses are equipped with bike racks that accommodate 2 bicycles. Bike owners load and unload bikes, on a first come first served basis.

  • Domestic pets are permitted on buses if they are well behaved, friendly and on a leash or in a carrier. Pets are not allowed on the seats.

  • All carry-on luggage must fit in luggage compartments located inside the vehicle. Nothing may be left in the aisle at any time.

  • Seatbelts are provided on most buses.
